Sérandite, Na(Mn,Ca)2Si3O8(OH) from Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, Canada discovered by J.M. Sérand in 1931, on display at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. contains element number 11 on the periodic table: sodium, a soft, silvery white and reactive metal. Sérandite is most abundant in Canada while China is sodium’s #1 producer. Photographer: Annarosa Z

Sodium is an important dietary component--in salt, sodium chloride, NaCl

In this snack, the nutrition analysis shows 8% of the recommended daily allowance of sodium in the snack.

Glaucophane

Formula: Na2Mg3Al2Si8O22(OH)2

From the Franciscan Complex, California on display at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. and viewed during a Chemistry One field trip.

The mineral sample contains sodium, Na, whose abundance in the Earth’s crust = 2.6%, A bundance in the universe = 0.002%

Sodium is used in bright lights including many streel lamps in Washington D.C., USA.  An electric charge or arc, passes across a space between two electrodes and the sodium vapor produces a bright glow (in the presence of some mercury vapor).  The bulb uses lucalox, which is an aluminum oxide, Al2O3, ceramic, to make the outer bulb so it can withstand high temperatures.
