Argon Ar
Where is argon used--or where does it impact our everyday lives?
Argon is an inert gas and used in incandescent light bulbs to prolong the life of the tungsten filament.
The cylinders of argon were photographed in Merrifield, Virginia, USA, where we get the liquid nitrogen for our study of gases in the Chemistry Two course.
The potassium isotope potassium-40 (present as 0.012% of a sample of potassium or in the potassium in compounds) decays to argon-40 4019 K --> 4020Ar + 0+1e (a positron)
[potassium-40 beta decay to calcium-40 is more likely]
Argon was discovered spectroscopically, where light is split into characteriastic wavelengths. Here Chemistry One students are studying the spectra of lights and elements.
