The ~92 naturally occuring elements combine to give all the known compounds

 

If a material is crystalline, with a HIGH melting point, and maybe soluble in water, it's an ion ic compound, where the elctrons re donated or received between atoms to form positive and negative ions.

 

If a material is a gas or liquid at room temperature or a solid with a LOW melting point, the elements are combined with covalent bonds where the valence electrons are shared between the atoms.
