PS1-2 PRE-KNOWLEDGE for Chemical Reactions:
From NGSS MS PS1-2
In chemical reactions, you should recognize that:
When a chemical reaction takes place, the atoms of the reactants are rearranged to form new molecules and these products have different properties compared to the reactants. Be able to look at chemicals before and after interacting to determine if a chemical reaction has taken place using the following properties: density, melting point, boiling point, odor, solubility and flammability.
In a chemical reaction, with the rearrangement of atoms into new molecules, the overall mass is conserved. [Law of conservation of mass]
Some chemical reactions are exothermic (give out energy, such as fuels burning) others are endothermic (take in energy).
And be able to draw reactions in terms of diagrams with atoms showing the reactants and the products
Be able to analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances (density, melting point, boiling point, solubility, flammability, and odor) before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred.
MS-PS1-2 Suitable examples include burning sugar or steel wool, fat + NaOH, and Zn + HCl
