PS1-1 Matter and its interactions PREKNOWLEDGE

Build a molecule PhET Activity

In Structure and Properties of matter, you should recognize that:
Molecules are made up of groups of atoms
Compounds are made up of atoms bonded together in different ways
Molecules can have two bonded atoms or any number up to thousands combined in plastics and other macromolecules
Crystals are large solids with an extensive structure – lattice - of ions

Recognize the use of models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules such as hydrogen, H2, methane, CH4 and methanol, CH3OH
Recognize the use of models to describe the atomic composition extended structures –example: crystals such as salt, NaCl and large molecules = macromolecules such as diamonds
Models such as 3-D ball and stick models, drawings, computer digital representations

Previous study does not have to include knowledge of valence electrons or bond energies
